Una voce che gratta come carta vetrata, alimentata senza dubbio alcuno a bourbon e paglie. Personalità che trasuda anche dalle foto delle riviste. Un percorso musicale che inizia nella seconda metà degli ottanta con la cult band degli Screaming Trees, caratterizzata da un sound hard rock psichedelico tipico dei settanta, che al culmine della carriera, nel 92, viene inserita di straforo nel movimento grunge con il penulltimo album del combo: Sweet oblivion.
Il commiato definitivo dalle scene sarà quattro anni dopo, ma intanto Lanegan ha cominciato a costruirsi un percorso in solitaria, praticando uno stile diverso, acustico e introverso, da poeta maledetto. Winding sheet (1990) e Whiskey for the holy ghost (1994) vengono molto apprezzati dalla critica e cominciano a creare quello zoccolo duro di die hard fans che l'americano si porta dietro tuttora.
Seguono, i sempre più convincenti Scraps at midnight (1998); I'll take care of you (album di cover, 1999) e il più ispirato del lotto, a parere di chi scrive, Field songs (2001).
Nel 2002 Mark partecipa all'acclamato Songs for the deaf dei Queens of the stone age, seguendo il gruppo anche in tour. L'anno successivo esce a suo nome l'EP Here comes that weird chill, che anticipa l'album Bubble gum (2004) lavoro lungo e più vario nel sound rispetto ai precedenti.
Lanegan, a questo punto della sua carriera dà vita ad una serie di collaborazioni con diversi amici, che vanno ancora dai Queens of the stone age, a Greg Dulli (ex degli Afgean wigs), con il quale forma i Gutter Twins, che si esibiscono tra l'altro con gli italiani Afterhours in alcune date del loro tour del 2006, partecipa insieme a Josh Haden degli Spain e al grande Will Oldham, al secondo capitolo del progetto Soulsavers (2007), ragione sociale del duo Rich Marin e Ian Glover. Pubblica infine due dischi (2006 e 2008) con la parte femminile del duo scozzese Belle & Sebastian, Isobel Campbell, proponendo uno stile che a più di un ascoltatore richiama i duetti tra Johnny Cash e la moglie June Carter.
